He was a most peculiar man
That's was Mrs. Reardon says
And she should know
She lived upstairs from him
She said he was a most peculiar man

He was a most peculiar man
He lived all alone
Within a house, within a room,
Within himself
A most peculiar man

He had no friends
He seldom spoke
And no one in town ever spoke to him
'Cos he wasn't friendly and he didn't care
And he wasn't like them
Oh no, he was a most peculiar man

Hi died last Saturday
He turned on the gas
And he went to sleep
With the windows closed
So he'd never wake up
To his silent world and his tiny room
And Mrs. Reardon says he has a brother
Somewhere
Who should be notified soon

And all the people said,
What a shame that he's dead
But, wasn't he a most peculiar man

I'm sitting in the railway station
Got a ticket for my destination
On a tour of one night stands
My suitcase and guitar in hand
And every stop is neatly planned
For a poet and a one man band

Homewardbound
I wish I was homewadrbound
Home where my thought's escaping
Home where my music's playing
Home where my love lies waiting
Silently for me

Every day's an endless stream
Of cigarettes and magazines
And each town looks the same to me
The movies and the factories
And every stranger's face I see
Reminds me that I long to be

Homewardbound
I wish I was homewadrbound
Home where my thought's escaping
Home where my music's playing
Home where my love lies waiting
Silently for me

Tonight I'll sing my song again
I'll play the game and pretend
But all my words come back to me
In shades of mediocrity
Like emptiness and harmony
I need someone to comfort me

Homewardbound
I wish I was homewadrbound
Home where my thought's escaping
Home where my music's playing
Home where my love lies waiting
Silently for me

Through the corridors of sleep
Pass shadow dark and deep
My mind is dances and leaps in confusion
I don't know what is real
I can't touch what I feel
And I hide behind the shield of my illusion

So I'll continue to continue to pretend
My life will never end
And flowers never bend with the rainfall

The mirror on my wall
Casts an image dark and small
And I'm not sure at all it's my reflection
I'm blinded by the light
Of God and truth and right
And I wonder in the night without direction.

So I'll continue to continue to pretend
My life will never end
And flowers never bend with the rainfall

No matter if you're born
To play the king of pawn
For the line is thinly drawn 'tween joy and sorrow
And so my fantasy
Becomes reality
And I must be whan I must be and face tomorrow

So I'll continue to continue to pretend
My life will never end
And flowers never bend with the rainfall

What a drem I had
Pressed in organdy
Clothed in crinoline
Of smoky burgundy
Softer than the rain.

I wandered empty streets
Down puts the shop displays
I heard cathedral bells
Tripping down the alley ways
As I walked on

And as you ran to me
Your cheeks flushed with the night
We walked on frosted fields
Of juniper and lamplight
I held your hand

And when I awoke
And felt you warm and near
I kissed your honey hair
With my greateful tears
Oh I love you girl
Oh I love you.

The last train is nearly due
The underground is closing soon
And in the dark deserted station
Restless in anticipation
A man waits in the shadows

His restless eyes leap and scratch
At all that they can touch or catch
And hidden deep within his pocket
Safe within his silent socket
He holds a colored crayon.

Now from the tunel's stony womb
The carriage rides to meet the groom
And opens wide and welcome doors
But he hesitates, then withdraws
Deeper in the shadows

And the train is gone suddenly
On wheels clicking silently
Like a gently taaping litany
And he holds his crayon rosary
Tigher in his hand.

Now from his pocket quick he flashes
The crayon on the wall he slashes
Deep upon the advertising
A single worded poem compisied
Of four letters.

And his heart is loughing screaming pounding
The poem across the track rebounding
Shadowed by the exit light
His legs take their ascending flight
To seek the breast of darkness
And be suckled by the night.

Hello darkness my old friend
I've come to talk with you again
Because a vision softly creeping
Left its seeds while I was sleeping
And the vision that was planted in my brain
Still remains within the sound of silence

In restless dreams I walked alone
Narrow streets of cobble stone
'Nearth the halo of a street lamp
I turned my collar to the cold and damp
When my eyes were stabled by the flash
                    of the neon light
That split the night and touched the
                    sound of silence

And in the naked light I saw
Ten thousand people maybe more
People talking without speaking
People hearing without listening
People writing songs that voices never share
And no one dares disturb the sound of silence

"Fools" said I "You do not know
Silence like a cancer grows
Hear my words that I might teach you
Take my arms that I might reach you"
But my words like silent raindrops fell
And echoed, in the wells of silence

And the people bowed and prayed
To the neon God they made
And the sign' flashed out its warning
In the words that it was forming
And the sign said:
"The words of the prophets are written
On the subway walls and tenement halls"
And whispered in the sounds of silence
